Mary is a portrait of foreshadowing. The painting depicts the fulfillment of Gabriel's announcement that the Holy Spirit would come upon her and the power of the Most High would overshadow her. The shadow of Mary's outstretched arms form a cross which foreshadows the obedience of her Son Jesus, The Holy One, who will stretch out His arms upon the cross in fulfillment โโโof Gabriel's very words. Luke 1:26-35
Elizabeth Roskam is an award winning artist who graduated from the University of Michigan (Go Blue!). She has done extensive work in interior design, graphic design and pen and ink drawings. Her work has been featured in numerous news publications. She has continued to pursue her creative passion almost exclusively in oil painting. She is often asked about what inspires her to paint. Her answer is "Beauty. And beauty comes in may forms: in color, perspective, light and proportion. And nothing is more beautiful than the work of God. The Psalmist must have been thinking of the a sunset when he wrote: 'The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands." (Psalm 19:1)
